Watertown Defers Last Day to Pay Taxes for Most Taxpayers
In response to Governor Lamont’s Executive Order 7S (EO7S) and Executive Order 7W (EO7W), the Watertown Town Council voted to adopt an ‘extended grace period’ for taxes due on July 1, 2020. The last day to pay these taxes without interest will be October 1, 2020. Any tax unpaid on October 2, 2020 will be subject to 6% interest. Read further for qualifications.
The program is automatically extended to all taxpayers for personal property and motor vehicle tax bills. Real estate taxes will also automatically qualify for the program except in two instances.
1. This deferment does not apply to any real estate tax accounts for which a bank holds an escrow account. These financial institutions will be responsible for paying their client’s real estate taxes due on July 1, 2020 within the normal 30-day grace period and will be subject to 3% interest on August 3, 2020.
2. Residential landlords MUST comply with Executive Order 7X and email the Tax Collector at email@example.com to receive deferment. Commercial landlords MUST apply for the deferment through the Tax Collector's office on or before July 1, 2020 with no exceptions per Executive Order 7S. See tab under Tax Deferment Program for Landlords - Instruction for Landlords
Be aware that this notice applies to property located and taxed in the Town of Watertown only. If you own property located in another municipality, you should verify what that municipality has done with respect to EO7S and EO7W.
