The Watertown Fire Department was born in a cold winter week in February 1894. There were six major fires on just six consecutive nights. The first fire was in a large barn just south of Merritt Heminway's house on Main Street. Fires continued each evening thereafter until February 11th, when Citizen's Hall on Woodruff Avenue was destroyed. The time for action had arrived. The call went out to citizens interested in forming a volunteer fire department. Fifty enthusiastic residents soon responded. Today we have 95 active members who proudly and effectlvely serve their community. |
