The Watertown Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that Copes Rubbish is donating one month free residential garbage removal for any Watertown resident that purchases an Earth Machine backyard compost bin through the department. The reduced rate composters are being subsidized through a generous grant from the Northeast Resource Recovery Association and are available until April 1, 2011. The department is offering Earth Machine composters to all residents for recycling of organic materials at cost ($45.00) for a limited time. 35 gallon rain barrels and kitchen scrap pails are also available. The compost bins convert grass, leaves and table scraps into rich garden soil.

Please contact the Public Works Department at (860) 945-5240 or the Recreation Department at (860) 945-5246 if you have any questions regarding this matter or wish to order a composter, pail or rain barrel.

"On average, Americans waste 25 percent of the food they prepare. We throw away 44 percent of our yard trimmings and over 90 percent of our wood waste. It’s time to be part of the solution.

EPA launched its new organic materials Website. This Website is a great place for businesses and consumers to find ways to put surplus food, yard trimmings and wood waste to good use. With information on the Food Waste Recovery Hierarchy, EPA's GreenScapes program, and wood waste recovery options, everyone can find a way to be part of the solution.

Help EPA spread the word about finding productive ways to use organics.

COMPOSTERS FOR SALE AT $45.00 EACH FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY

The town of Watertown is now offering composters for sale at cost.  In addition to being a great source of compost for lawns and gardens, they will help the environment by promoting recycling and reducing the amount of material entering the waste stream.

COMPOSTERS ARE NOW BEING SOLD FOR $45 UNTIL APRIL 3RD ONLY

We will be taking payment ($45.00) and orders.  Once sixteen orders have been received and paid for, the composters will be ordered for delivery and may be picked up by residents at Depot Square.  This enables us to get a reduced, bulk shipping rate.  Orders will be taken at Public Works, the Transfer Station and the Recreation Department.

There is a sample unit that will be available for viewing that will be circulating.  It comes with literature explaining the whole composting process.

Please contact the Public Works Department at (860) 945-5240 if you have any questions regarding this worthwhile project.
