Transfer Station FAQ’s
What Are the hours and the fee schedule of the transfer station?
The hours and fee schedule for the transfer station are listed below.
Where is the transfer station located?
The transfer station is located on Old Baird Rd off of Hamilton Avenue.
What is the difference between a transfer station sticker and a transfer station coupon?
A dump sticker proves that you are a town resident, allowing you to use the transfer station. It is usually placed on the driver’s side windshield so it is visible to the transfer station attendant. Otherwise, without a sticker, residents from other towns might try to use the transfer station on the Watertown taxpayer’s dime. When requesting a dump sticker, you will need proof of residency, which is usually your license, as well as your plate no. for tracking. The dump coupons are bought in amounts according to what you have to dispose of.
Is there a cost for the stickers and item disposals?
Annual stickers are $20 with proof of residency.
Can I pay for the stickers at the transfer station?
Yes, and also at the Tax Collector’s and Public Works offices between 9:00 am & 5:00 pm.
What forms of payment are accepted?
Cash or check (made payable to the Town of Watertown)
Are there expiration dates on the stickers and coupons?
The stickers are good for a one-year period (until Dec.1st 2009), at which time new stickers will be available.
Is there a list of acceptable items that can be taken to the transfer station available to residents?
The fee schedule is posted on the website for your convenience and can be downloaded by clicking here or you can obtain a copy from the Public Works office. Hard copies are also available during regular business hours at the Engineering office located in the Depot Square Mall and at the Transfer Station during operating hours. You may also call the Engineering office at 860-945-5240 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm M-F and request a copy to be mailed.
Are there any items that are free to bring to the transfer station?
Yes, provided you have purchased a permit sticker for the transfer station.
Non-fee items include:
used motor oil
antifreeze
car batteries
leaves and some brush (in brown bio-degradable bags)
newspaper
aluminum cans
glass bottles
recyclable plastics #1 & 2
used clothing
Can I bring Household Hazardous waste to the transfer station?
No. However, the Town, being a part of the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (Cog) sponsors drop-off days at various locations in the district for these types of items at no charge to the resident. You only need to provide proof of residency, usually your driver’s license. Drop off dates and times and a list of acceptable/non-acceptable items will be listed on the website and in the local paper.
Can I bring electronics to the Transfer Station?
Yes, for a fee or they can be disposed of for free at one of the periodic CRRA collection events in the area. Click here to view the latest information on the CRRA website concerning upcoming electronics recycling events.
Why do I have to pay for brush?
You pay for brush to defray the cost of grinding the brush. The D.E.P. does not allow us to burn it anymore. The wood chips from the grinding are available to residents at no cost.
Can I take my household garbage to the Transfer Station and how much does it cost?
Yes. the fee schedule is here.
Why doesn’t the Town have curbside pickup for larger items like couches, stoves, refrigerator’s etc?
The Town Highway Dept. does not have enough staff or time for this large cleanup, and it would be very costly to pay an independent hauler to do it.
Why doesn’t the Transfer Station accept grass clippings?
The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection does not allow grass clippings to be disposed of at the Transfer Station.
Do the Transfer Station fees cover all the costs for operating the facility?
No, the operation is subsidized by the Town.
What happens to the leaves left at the Transfer Station?
They are composted and reused by the town.

REUSE-A-SHOE PROGRAM
Reuse-A-Shoe is an integral part of NikeGO, Nike’s long-term commitment to promote healthier lifestyles for kids through physical activity. Since the Reuse-A-Shoe program began in 1993, Nike has helped donate more than 170 sport surfaces, called NikeGO Places, to communities around the world. The surfaces use Nike Grind material as a component of the total surface composition, representing an approximate number of recycled shoes in each surface. Kids win because many of these sports surfaces are donated in communities where they wouldn't otherwise have access to high-performance sports surfaces. It’s also a win for the environment, as thousands of pairs of athletic shoe material are diverted from landfills.
Reuse-A-Shoe is a key component of Nike's long-term commitment to waste elimination by helping to close the loop on the life cycle of literally millions of pairs of old, worn-out or otherwise unusable athletic shoe material. Reuse-A-Shoe also plays an important role in Nike's long-term commitment to help increase the physical activity of young people to improve their lives by reusing this old athletic shoe material in new places for kids to play and be active.
What They Do With Them
The result of our grinding process is what’s called Nike Grind material – three distinct types of material, each of which is used in a different way to make new sports surfaces, like soccer and football fields, basketball and tennis courts, tracks and playground surfacing.
Nike Grind Rubber, from outsoles and recycled manufacturing material, goes into baseball and soccer fields, as well as golf products, weight room flooring and running tracks.
Nike Grind Foam, from midsoles, is used in synthetic basketball courts, tennis courts and playground surfacing.
Nike Grind Upper Fabric, from textile and leather uppers is used for padding under hardwood basketball floors.
Isn't there a better place for them than the trash? We thought so. By realizing the significant impact of discarded shoes, Nike and our Reuse-A-Shoe partners are trying to help, and you can get involved too.
It's easy. Nike and its partners provide you with several options to turn in your old Nikes -- or any other brand of athletic shoes -- to be recycled. The best option for you depends on where you live and how many old shoes you'd like to donate.
The Town of Watertown is pleased to be a part of the Reuse-A-Shoe program.
The Transfer Station located at Old Baird Rd is a local drop off center.
Please remember only non-metal containing athletic shoes can be accepted.
USED BOOK COLLECTION
The Town of Watertown is pleased to announce that used books, Videos, CD’s, DVDs, Sports Cards, Records, LPs and Comic Book are now being accepted by the Watertown Transfer Station at Old Baird Road.
The Town of Watertown will be partnering with GOT BOOKS in order to recycle and reuse books to keep them out of the waste stream. This service is being provided at no cost to the town or resident with a valid transfer station permit.
Books, videos, CD’s, DVDs, Sports Cards, Records, LPs and Comic Books can be dropped off at the Watertown Transfer Station during their normal operating hours.
If you have any further questions, you can contact the Department of Public Works at (860) 945-5240.
Effective April 1, 2006, the Watertown Transfer Station located on Old Baird Road will have new rates for almost all materials. A permit sticker will be required for all residents who use the Transfer Station and the annual permit fee will be $20.00.
To obtain a permit for your vehicle, you must show proof of residency i.e., a drivers’ license, recent tax bill or recent utility bill. Permits can be purchased at the Transfer Station, the Department of Public Works Engineering Office at 51 Depot Street, Suite 203, the Town Hall Annex at 424 Main Street and the Watertown Town Hall, 37 DeForest Street. Sticker given is only good for the vehicle registration that is provided. If you plan on using a vehicle that is not registered in Town, you may obtain a temporary pass from the Town Manager, Town Clerk or Public Works Offices. Proof of residency required for temporary pass, i.e. utility bill or motor vehicle license.
The new rates will also be posted at the Transfer Station. Any questions regarding the above changes, please call 860-945-5240. Office hours at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (No Commercial/Contractor Demolition materials accepted. Contractors or Commercial can take material to C.R.R.A. in Hartford)
Leaf Disposal
The Town of Watertown Public Works Department (DPW) would like to remind the public that it will accept leaves from town residents at the transfer station during regular business hours, as long as they are not from a commercial firm. There is no fee for this service. The leaves should be transported to the transfer station and then deposited in the designated piles. All paper and plastic bags or other containers should be removed from the transfer station upon leaf disposal. Grass clippings are not permitted at this facility. The leaves will eventually be processed and turned into loam for use in the town. The Transfer Station is located on Old Baird Road, off of Hamilton Avenue.
If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact the Public Works Department at (860) 945-5240.
News Release
The Town of Watertown Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that the municipal recycling program has been expanded, again. The list of recyclables that is now accepted by the Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority now includes shredded paper. Clean, shredded paper may now be placed with junk mail and newspaper in paper bags or corrugated boxes and left curbside with the other recyclables or dropped off at the transfer station located on Old Baird Road. This specifically excludes any kind of non-paper bag or envelope, i.e. plastic or Tyvek as these materials cause problems with the material handling equipment.
There is no charge to residents at the Transfer Station. Proof of residency, such as a driver's license, tax bill or other identification, is required for entrance.
In addition to providing a significant environmental benefit, the goal of the program is to reduce costs. CRRA does not charge to dispose of recycled items and sells them on the commodity market. The revenue from these sales is then used to help reduce the disposal price of regular municipal solid waste.
