If you are a veteran or a veteran’s widow who has served within qualifying war years and has filed their discharge papers (DD-214) with the town clerk, you will be eligible for the following exemptions:
Assessment reduction for all veterans, based on your disability rating with the VA (must provide paperwork) Basic reduction: $4500
Totally and Permanently Disabled Veterans:
Annual application for 100% Permanently and Totally Disabled Veterans
Pursuant to Section 12-93 of the Connecticut General Statutes as amended by Public Act 25-168 Section 235, the Office of Policy and Management prescribes an application to be used for assessment years commencing on and after October 1, 2025, for any person claiming exemption under subdivision (83) of Section 12-81.
House Bill 07067- Modification to PA 24-46, (line 322) enacting 100% Permanent and Totally Disabled
Prior to October 1, 2025:
Please submit your VA letters to our office as proof of Totally and Permanently disabled in conjunction with PA 24-46, the relevant portion of which is expected to be codified as CGS § 12-81(83). DD-214 must be on file on or before 9/30/2024

If you have met the above requirements and are at least 65 years of age or fully disabled through social security, and your income is not above the limits listed below, you will be eligible for additional veteran’s benefits.
State Option Benefit
Single person: $45,200 income limit
Married couple: $55,100 income limit
Local Option Benefit
Single person: $45,200 income limit
Married couple: $55,100 income limit
For both state and local options, you must apply in person at the Assessors' office with all proofs of all incomes.
Applications are accepted February 1st – October 1st
Active Duty
If you are an active duty member of the armed forces on the assessment date and have filed a written application, you will be eligible for the total exemption
Apply before December 31st of the assessment year.
